TSL Australia have successfully managed the complex relocation of a complete industrial grinder system from Melbourne to Derince in Türkiye, combining multiple transport modes to overcome the challenging cargo dimensions and limited routing options.

The complete system was dismantled into 34 individual pieces. Most components were packed into a combination of general-purpose and open-top containers, while two exceptionally long machine bed sections required a specialised RORO solution using MAFI trailers.

Allan Hou at TSL Australia explains; "The project evolved over almost 12 months as a result of site delays, dismantling requirements and changing shipping availability. Finding a commercially viable solution for the two overlength sections was one of the main challenges. Conventional breakbulk and container-vessel alternatives carried significantly higher freight costs, while Turkish import requirements limited the acceptable discharge ports to the Derince area.

RORO options were also restricted, with many suitable carriers either not serving the required ports or unable to provide a practical connecting service.

An additional challenge arose shortly before the shipment when the originally planned carrier stopped accepting spot bookings. With the cargo ready to move, TSL quickly reassessed the available routes, negotiated with alternative carriers, and secured replacement vessel space."

TSL Australia's solutions delivered a freight saving of more than 30% compared with the other available shipping alternatives while still meeting the operational requirements of the project.

They coordinated the project across planning, dismantling, equipment allocation, specialised inland transport, container loading, MAFI operations, and international shipping.

"This successful relocation highlights the importance of flexibility, carrier relationships, and detailed route planning when managing complex industrial cargo across international markets."
