C.H. Robinson Project Delivers Oversized Equipment
13th May 2013
C.H Robinson Project Logistics successfully transported a Reaction Tank and Blow Down Drum from the manufacturer at Swan Island in Portland, Oregon to a site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The client will use the oversized items to construct a Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) Pilot Plant near West Ells in the Canadian oil sands.
C.H. Robinson recognized the success of this project depended on both preparation and experience. The team obtained all necessary transport permits and performed a detailed route survey prior to the transportation of the equipment. The survey determined the most cost effective and safest modes of transportation for the tank and drum. As part of the process, Project Logistics dispatched an experienced logistics expert to both ports along the journey to ensure proper handling and transition.
In order to avoid the narrow mountain roads with the large pieces, the items began the trip by barge. The tank and drum were properly lashed and secured onto two trailers then loaded onto the barge. Over the course of two days, the equipment traveled 620 km from Swan Island to the Port of Wilma, Washington on the Columbia and Snake River system. Upon arrival at port, the two trailers traversed the remaining 1,850 km by truck over U.S. and Canadian highways. The entire journey took only nine days, ending with the cargo arriving safely at the destination.
